The Peristyle

You’ve probably seen it before without really noticing it – or even knowing that it goes by a name known to few: the Peristyle. In architecture, this structure corresponds to the “colonnade which surrounds an interior courtyard or a building” and, by extension, a “colonnade which decorates the façade of a building.”

Horizon 2030 brings the Péristyle du Cinquantenaire up to date with Tipi Cinquantenaire, the Guinguette du Péristyle, with a magnificent view over the park. And you can enjoy all kinds of activities right in front of the Arcades!

History

The Péristyle du Cinquantenaire was designed by architect Gédéon Bordiau. This majestic neoclassical structure completed in 1905. This impressive portico of Corinthian columns frames the monumental entrance to the Parc du Cinquantenaire. Above, the hemicycle is adorned with remarkable mosaics created between 1920 and 1930 by six artists to commemorate the First World War. These mosaics form an official memorial, celebrating peace in the Army Museum and war in the Royal Museums of Art and History.

Activities

Le Péristyle has opened its doors to welcome you to its guinguette (open-air dancing bar), but that’s not all it has to offer! The main purpose of this venue is to offer cultural activities: “Midis Découvertes” (Discovery Lunch) lectures, arcade games, mosaic tours, and much more.

Guinguette by Tipi

Tipi Cinquantenaire is the Guinguette on the Péristyle, with a magnificent view over the park. It’s a place to eat, chill and
meet. That’s the motto of this new venue, which is now open to the public and was previously inaccessible. You’ll also be able to enjoy all kinds of cultural activities in the park and in the museums over the coming months.
